Gavyn Spotted Tail

Gavyn graduated in May 2023 with a master’s degree in Secondary Education plus Certification from the University of South Dakota. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Native American Studies and English, also from the University of South Dakota. His long term goal is to create and implement a tailored method of education for indigenous people that promotes healthy lifestyles (mental, physical, spiritual, and familial). At the moment, he serves as a teacher in the neighboring Cheyenne River Reservation. At school, he was an active participant in the community, teaching the Lakota language to members of the Vermillion High School Native American Cultural Club. He draws inspiration from the strong Sinte Gleska tiospaye (family) that he descends from. Chief Sinte Gleska left a strong legacy of strength and leadership that contributed mightily to the sovereignty the Sicangu Lakota Oyate enjoys today. His legacy is Gavyn’s motivation to make change in his community. Earning not one but two degrees while navigating the challenges of a predominantly white university is a great start to making change.
