Miranda Cedillo
Miranda is currently a sophomore at Black Hills State University. As one of the only Native Americans at T.F. Riggs High School, Miranda was aware of her differences in skin color, expectations, and opportunity. She also felt differences at home. Because of her family’s financial instability, going to college was not something her parents prepared her for. But through hard work and a defiant attitude, Miranda conquered these obstacles. She became one of eleven students in her high school class to graduate, and with no hand-outs but twenty dollars for gas money from her father, Miranda made the leap to university. Outside of the classroom, Miranda has become an active and proud member of the Spearfish community by achieving her childhood dream of becoming a firefighter, a role which has given her strength and a sense of belonging. Miranda’s defiance, independence, and hardwork have been the keys to her success as both a student and firefighter, and they remain her greatest strengths as she continues down her higher education journey.
