Bryce Hammer

Bryce Hammer is currently a freshman student at South Dakota State University. His parents moved to the Rosebud Indian Reservation to begin careers as respected educators at the local Todd County School District. Although not Lakota himself, Bryce grew up with daily exposure to the Lakota way of life through his peers and considers the reservation to be his home. Upon his acceptance to SDSU, Bryce was not offered any financial aid, which has been a heavy burden, as paying for his education will be tough on his family due to his father’s recent cancer diagnosis. Bryce credits his mother and father for teaching him the importance of self-determination and effort - values that have been greatly exemplified within sports. He is an accomplished student athlete, making it to South Dakota’s state golf and track tournaments five times, despite struggling with scoliosis. Bryce was also a star student in the classroom, making the A honor roll all four years of high school and earning admission to his school’s chapter of the National Honor Society.
